Everything will work smoothly like Swiss clockwork. However, the truth is, this state of perfection cannot last forever. There will be some point in your relationship, where the troubles will brew and become more than you can handle. This happens with all relationships so you owe it to the good times that you once shared to work upon the problems that you’re now facing. Both of you would need to work hard to make the relationship work. However, there are times, this option can turn out to be futile and after a period of endlessly fighting, you might begin to ask yourself – is this relationship worth the trouble that it has been causing you.

Be honest to yourself

If you are contemplating a divorce or separation, you need to give serious thoughts to the situation that you are in, so that later you do not regret the decision. You must answer to yourself a few questions about the relationship – with honesty, so that you know where you stand with your feelings.

Are you honest to your partner?

Faith and honesty are the most important things in a relationship. Therefore, you should ask yourself if there are any unresolved issues in this sphere of your relationship. Do you trust your partner? Do you trust yourself to remain faithful? If your answer is ‘no’ to any of the two questions, you have serious issues to deal within your relationship.

Listing your priority

To help yourself with the self-appraisal, make a list of the people that matter to you in your life. Does your partner figure in the list? Again, ask yourself about the last time the two of you did something together and enjoyed that moment. Do you really have “fun” when you are with your partner? Or is that chapter of your courtship long forgotten and dead? Is there any way you can revive that magic? If you feel that you have tried enough and the spark that was in your relationship cannot be revived, perhaps it is time that you gave up on this relationship.

Is the respect still alive?

Yet another factor that may help you to realize whether the relationship is worth fighting for is by asking yourself if the two of you respect each other and your opinion. If you no longer care what the other person has to say about a particular issue, it is time to realize that you do not have a lot going for your relationship.

Gauge the comfort level

Are you comfortable in the relationship? Do you find support and comfort from your partner when you need it? A healthy relationship entails an amount of give-and-take in the emotional level. If you find that your spouse is never there when you are in need of some moral support or any other sort of help, it perhaps means that you are fighting a losing battle.

Talk to an expert

Finally, remember that giving up on a relationship when the going gets a bit tough is not the option that you should choose. You should work on the issues that are plaguing your relationship. You may want to consider taking several counseling sessions from a relationship counselor. You should also give consideration to all the options that can help you to save the relationship, before you take the huge decision of giving it all up. Remember, this is a life-changing decision and not something that you should take lightly.

A relationship is supposed to be a place where you can go when you need to be comforted. If your present relationship makes you feel comfortable when you go through something bad, then it is still worthy. However, if you constantly need to be comforted about the relationship and you are looking elsewhere for comfort, then there may be a problem.

In saving a relationship, there are lots of other things to consider. Don’t take this lightly. Ask tough questions, search for answers – it is only then you may be able to know whether saving this relationship is worth saving or not.
